African refugees strike against oppression

  • Following months of protest, in addition to intimidation by security forces, African refugees and asylum seekers announced a mass hunger strike on Monday to denounce the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Protesters' demands include fair treatment and transparency regarding their pending issues.

International Women's Day (IWD) March continues despite coronavirus fears

  • On the occasion of IWD, multiple groups participated in a feminist march, which began in Mathaf and moved towards the Ring Bridge and the Association of Banks, before ending at Martyrs' Square. In Sidon, women marched under the slogan "You are free in the streets." In Zahle, Syrian refugee women protested outside the UNHCR to demand justice, the right to decent housing and living, and access to food aid and health care.

Parliamentary sessions postponed after number of coronavirus patients rises to 41

  • The number of coronavirus patients hiked to 41, after 9 new people were tested positive on Monday and 4 on Sunday. The Lebanese parliament announced in a statement the postponement of all parliamentary committee sessions, including Wednesday's meeting with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri.

Fitch agency downgrades Lebanon's foreign currency rating

  • Economy Minister Raoul Nehme told Reuters that Lebanon awaits creditors' decision, either through negotiation or litigation. Nehme indicated that the decision may take weeks, although banks indicate a desire to negotiate. Regarding debt restructuring, he added, "There will be difficult days, but I am confident there is light at the end of the tunnel." Meanwhile, the global ratings agency Fitch lowered Lebanon's foreign currency rating from CC to C, and will further downgrade to D after the seven-day grace period following nonpayment of Eurobond debts.

Open fire outside Kataeb Party headquarters

  • A group of unknown attackers shot six gunshots at the Kataeb Party headquarters in the Saifi area on Sunday. The party released a statement in response, calling on the government to identify and disclose the assailants.
