PM Hassan Diab announces default
- Cabinet unanimously voted to not pay the $1.2 billion Eurobonds due March 9 at a session Saturday afternoon in Baabda Palace. Following the session, Diab announced that a plan will be developed to restructure the banking sector, in addition to negotiating with creditors for fair debt restructuring.
Protests ongoing despite fear over coronavirus
- On day 143, hundreds of protesters marched across the country - from Sidon and Tripoli to Beirut, Tyre, Zahle, and Zouk Mosbeh - to denounce worsening economic conditions and financial policies.
Six new cases of coronavirus
- Rafic Hariri Hospital announced six new cases of coronavirus, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 28. The hospital added that it had tested 140 people for the virus, and the remaining 134 were tested negative.
IWD March and Order of Engineers' elections in Beirut postponed
- The International Women's Day March, meant to take place on Sunday March 8, has been postponed due to health-related concerns regarding coronavirus. Elections for the Order of Engineers in Beirut were postponed for similar reasons. Meanwhile, elections for the Order of Engineers in Tripoli will proceed tomorrow as planned, with the necessary health precautions.
